At the time of the takeover, each Sheriff's Office had to choose to handle Workers Compensation matters in house with their own attorneys or to have the Commonwealths Human Resource Division represent the Sheriff's Office in Workers Compensation administration. The Barnstable County Sheriff's Office originally decided to handle itw Workers Compensation claims in house with its General Counsel. This went on for about 17 years.
