The criminal investigation by the MSP in cooperation with the Essex CountyDistrictAttorneysOffice remains active. Police Officer Canela joined the Salem January 30, 2017. He was the subject of two previous disciplinary investigations. The first, in August of 2019, was for Inappropriate Conduct with a member of the Salem Police Department and was concluded without a finding.

As we previously discussed, the Essex CountyDistrictsAttorneyOffice provided the Lynn Police Department with tens of thousands of pages of personal text messages between Officer Plessas and more than 100 other individuals sent and/or received over the course of many years.
Officer Plessas cell phone records, the Essex County District AttorneysOffice found text message exchanges alleging that there were Lynn police Officers who used illegal drugs."
The Salem police Department turned over these documents to the Essex CountyDistrictAttorneysOffice as part of an on-going criminal investigation into one of the police officers who is no longer employed by the City.

The vast majority of these documents were communications amongst family members and friends. These text messages were personal in nature and referenced dinner plans, family issues, medial issues, political and current event opinions.
