While nothing in this Contract shall contravene or discourage an informal attempt to discuss and settle issues between employee and supervisor, it is understood that the grievance procedure shall be utilized only after other methods of informal settlement are unsuccessful. Prior to filing a formal written grievance, the Lieutenant shall meet to discuss his grievance with the Deputy Chief.
